Fifth Disease
My heavens, there is so much that a Mama needs to know. This week I learned about the Fifth Disease, a common rash of childhood that Andy has brought to our attention. He is not ill, in that he feels fine and is not running a fever, but the rash on his face is not cute.

I've never heard of that! I hope Andy is feeling OK soon and that the rash goes away without complications.
Some of my nieces and nephews had that when they were younger. It didn't slow them down at all -- they just looked liked they had a permanent flush for a couple of weeks.
No fun--and contagious! We had an outbreak at school (in the US) a few years back...
I suspected this once in one of my kids so I am familiar with it somewhat.

This is commonly called 'Face Slap' disease since the kids look as if someone slapped their cheeks hard. Luckily they don't seem to feel bad. Unlike Coxsackie virus....another fun childhood experience!

- very bad rash but I didn't feel
sick, so it was a nice week off.

Yes, Fifths Disease, commonly called slapped cheeks virus, is generally pretty benign, unless a woman in her first trimester of pregnancy is exposed and contracts the disease...unfortunately most women miscarry. Keep the fever under control, and give him good hydration. This virus is caused by the B19 Parvo virus, a DNA virus that causes no long term effects in the child. Keep up the good work!! I am blogging at 4:30 am, get the kids up for school in 2 hours, and then go to work in 4 hours for a 12 hour shift!! I guess I am still on Magadan time!!

Wow! We had a good laugh at my friend's husband when he told us he was tested for Parvo (think puppies). I'm sure it's not funny at all when it's your little boy. Hope he's better soon.
